Roman & Bamboo Shade Install Guide
From measuring to mounting — everything you need to install your ViewTailor roman shades, bamboo blinds, and no-drill window treatments.
ViewTailor Window Treatment Installation Guide
Installing your new window treatments has never been easier. Whether you've ordered custom roman shades, no-drill blinds, or natural bamboo shades, this guide walks you through every step — from measuring your windows to mounting your shades with confidence. No contractor required.
Step 1: Measure Your Windows
Accurate measurements are the foundation of a perfect fit. ViewTailor shades are made to your exact dimensions, so please measure carefully before ordering.
Inside Mount (Recommended)
- Measure the width of the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom — use the narrowest measurement
- Measure the height from the top of the opening to the sill at the left, center, and right — use the longest measurement
- Do not make any deductions — ViewTailor will apply the necessary clearance allowance
Outside Mount
- Measure the desired finished width — typically 3–4 inches wider than the window opening on each side for full light blockage
- Measure the desired finished height — typically 3–4 inches above the window frame to the desired drop point
- Order the exact dimensions you want; no deductions are made for outside mount
Step 2: Installing Standard Roman Shades
Suitable for all Roman Shade styles including Flat Fold, Soft Fold, Pleated, and Relaxed Fold.
Tools Required
- Drill and drill bits
- Screwdriver
- Level
- Pencil
- Measuring tape
Installation Steps
- Unpack and inspect your shade and confirm all hardware (brackets, screws, headrail) is included
- Mark bracket positions — hold the headrail in position and mark the screw holes with a pencil. Use a level to ensure alignment
- Drill pilot holes at marked positions and insert wall anchors if mounting into drywall
- Secure the brackets with the provided screws
- Snap the headrail into the mounted brackets until you hear a click
- Test the operation — raise and lower the shade to confirm smooth movement
- Attach the cord cleat (if applicable) to the wall at a safe height, out of reach of children
Step 3: Installing No Drill Roman Shades
Our No Drill Roman Shade Collections are designed for tool-free, damage-free installation — ideal for renters or anyone who wants a hassle-free setup.
Tools Required
- None — no tools needed
Installation Steps
- Clean the mounting surface — wipe the window frame or wall area with a dry cloth to remove dust and grease
- Peel the adhesive backing from the no-drill brackets
- Press firmly onto the mounting surface for 30 seconds per bracket. Ensure brackets are level
- Wait 1 hour before attaching the headrail to allow the adhesive to fully bond
- Snap the headrail into the brackets
- Test gently — raise and lower the shade to confirm secure attachment
Note: No-drill brackets work best on smooth, non-porous surfaces such as painted wood, PVC, or aluminum window frames. Not recommended for textured walls or wallpaper.
Step 4: Installing No Cord Roman Shades
Our No Cord Roman Shade Collections offer a clean, child-safe cordless operation. Installation follows the same steps as standard roman shades above — no cord cleat is required.
- To raise: push the bottom rail upward firmly
- To lower: pull the bottom rail downward gently
Step 5: Installing Bamboo Shades
Our Luxury Woven Bamboo Shades install similarly to roman shades and are available in both standard and no-drill versions.
- Choose your mount type — inside or outside mount (see Step 1 for measuring guidance)
- Position the brackets at each end of the headrail, plus one center bracket for widths over 48 inches
- Mark, drill, and secure brackets as described in Step 2 (or use no-drill adhesive method from Step 3)
- Insert the headrail into the brackets and lock in place
- Attach the valance (if included) by clipping it onto the front of the headrail
- Test the lift cord or cordless mechanism to confirm smooth operation
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I install roman shades without drilling?
ViewTailor's no-drill roman shades use strong adhesive brackets that mount directly onto your window frame — no tools, no wall damage. Simply clean the surface, press the brackets firmly, wait 1 hour, and snap in the headrail. See Step 3 above for full details.
Can I install roman shades by myself?
Yes — all ViewTailor window treatments are designed for easy DIY installation. Standard roman shades require a drill and basic tools; no-drill versions require no tools at all. Most installations take 15–30 minutes per window.
What is the difference between inside mount and outside mount?
Inside mount sits within the window frame for a clean, recessed look. Outside mount covers the frame and surrounding wall, ideal for maximizing light blockage or covering an imperfect frame. Both options are available for all ViewTailor shades.
How do I install bamboo shades?
Bamboo shade installation follows the same process as roman shades. Mount the brackets, insert the headrail, and attach the valance if included. For widths over 48 inches, use a center support bracket to prevent sagging.
My shade is not hanging straight — what should I do?
Check that all brackets are level using a spirit level before securing. If the shade is already installed, loosen the bracket screws slightly, adjust the position, re-level, and re-tighten. For persistent issues, contact our support team.
Are ViewTailor shades safe for homes with children?
Yes — our cordless and no-cord roman shades eliminate cord hazards entirely, making them the safest choice for nurseries, children's rooms, and baby rooms. We recommend cordless options for all child-accessible windows.
